Speech Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease: Finding Your Voice Again

At Network Speech Pathology, we know how important communication is for maintaining independence, connection, and quality of life, especially for people living with Parkinson’s disease. Changes to speech and voice are common with Parkinson’s, and while they can feel frustrating or isolating, the good news is that the right support can make a big difference.

Why speech changes happen in Parkinson’s disease

Many people with Parkinson’s notice their voice becomes softer or harder to project. Others find their speech less clear, or that they run out of breath when talking. These changes are linked to the way Parkinson’s affects the muscles used for speech and breathing. Left unsupported, they can impact everyday conversations with family, friends, or health professionals, leading to reduced confidence and social withdrawal.

How we can help: SPEAK OUT!

Our entire team at Network Speech Pathology is SPEAK OUT!® trained, a proven evidence-based program developed by the Parkinson Voice Project. SPEAK OUT!® focuses on speaking with intent, helping to strengthen the muscles used for speech while improving clarity, vocal volume, and communication confidence.

We begin with 1:1 intensive blocks of SPEAK OUT!® therapy, tailored to each client’s needs and goals. This structured, individualised approach ensures that progress is made in a safe and supportive environment.

Following the intensive block, we offer clients the option to join our Parkinson’s voice group, delivered via telehealth at a lower cost. These ongoing group sessions provide a space to practise skills, maintain progress, and connect with others on a similar journey. They are designed to keep therapy accessible, sustainable, and motivating.

Why telehealth works for Parkinson’s therapy

We deliver all services online, meaning you can access therapy from the comfort of your own home—whether you live in a city, a rural town, or a remote community. Telehealth makes it possible for people across Australia to receive consistent, high-quality care without the barriers of travel, waiting lists, or location.

The bigger picture: quality of life and connection

Speech therapy for Parkinson’s is about much more than just volume or clarity. It’s about ensuring people feel heard, understood, and connected in their daily lives. With the right support, conversations at the dinner table, phone calls with family, and even medical appointments can feel easier and more successful.
